Only a 15-minute drive west of Gardnerville on SR-88 is Hope Valley, where you can head out to Picketts Junction (intersection of SR-88 and SR-89).  You will find a small parking lot on the south side of the intersection.  This lot is the start of the dirt road to Burnside Lake.  During winter you can park here and take a short hike to a wonderful sledding and tubing hill.  The road is also a great snowshoe and cross-country ski area.  There is a seasonal Yurt with snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals available.
