The rising air currents typical of the Sierra Nevada provide optimal conditions for soaring, and glider pilots from near and far return regularly to Carson Valley as one of the best places in the world to do it. Such is the concept behind Soaring NV, led by dedicated members of the longstanding Minden Soaring Club. Based out of the Minden-Tahoe Airport, Soaring NV specializes in flight training for prospective glider pilots, from the basics to more advanced instruction on racing and aerobatics. Their team is especially passionate about creating opportunities for students to learn more about pursuing a career in aviation, and will often introduce youth training and scholarship programs to create a pathway to success. But for those who’d rather simply enjoy the experience of gliding (and the incredible views that go with it), Soaring NV also offers year-round glider rides piloted by an experienced instructor. Soaring isn’t the only way to admire Carson Valley from the skies. Throughout the year, you’re likely to see a hot air balloon or two floating distantly overhead in the early mornings. Ideal weather conditions for balloon flights make this a popular activity to take in stunning panoramic views and reap the mental benefits of a fresh perspective. Balloon Nevada, along with its sister company Lake Tahoe Balloons has been operating in the area for many years, offering rides for large and small groups. Known for the expertise and friendliness of all their pilots, Balloon Nevada’s hot air balloon tours are often cited as an experience not to be missed. One such pilot, Sheldon Grauberger, has been flying balloons for over two decades, and has traveled all over the world attending balloon events. His spotless safety record is only about half as disarming as his easygoing nature, you couldn’t ask for a better tour guide. Though if you’d like an even more colorful introduction to the world of hot air ballooning, you probably could not pick a better way than by attending the annual Hot Air for Hope Carson Valley Balloon Festival, a weekend-long event in May that celebrates the aircraft by hosting as many as 30 pilots and their balloons for morning and tethered balloon launches, plus other fun activities.
