The High Sierra Fly Casters is holding a series of Fly Tying Workshops. The workshops are open to all interested in fly tying. Accompanied youth participation is most welcome!

The purpose of the workshops are to share collected fly tying knowledge. The target participants are those who want to move beyond absolute beginner or intermediate levels. Beginners are welcome to come and learn what fly tying is all about. there will be a fly of the month, or a presentation of something fly tying related.

Participants should bring their vice, tools, materials, and a desired fly pattern. The tables can accommodate both pedestal vices. Protective padding for the latter will be provided. Electric power is available at each table for lamps.

Workshop dates are as follows: January 16, February 20, March 20, and April 17.

At Sierra Shadows Lavender Farm, bring your creativity to this hand building clay workshop led by artist Michelle Mulligan, who will teach basic hand building clay skills. Join Michelle this April as she teaches the class how to make hand built mugs…using Sierra Shadows lavender, of course!

The Civilian Conservation Corp was probably the most popular of all of FDR’s New Deal programs. In less than 3 months from the time it was created, a quarter of a million young men and 1,463 camps were put to work improving public lands. Over the next 8 years, over three million young men built roads and trails, fought fires, constructed buildings, improved grazing lands, and worked on thousands of other public works projects…while providing much need financial relief to their families. Nevada enjoyed more work from the CCC (on a per capita basis) than any other state, and their legacy in the Silver State has left a lasting impact still present today. Join Carson Valley Arts Council in Minden on Wednesday, May 7, as they present NV Poet Laureate Shaun Griffin for an in-depth conversation about his work. Shaun Griffin’s soulful poetry and engagement with Nevada communities make him one of the state’s most well-loved literary figures.

He is the author of This is What the Desert Surrenders, Bathing in the River of Ashes and Woodsmoke, Wind and the Peregrine.

Recurring themes in his poetry are “… family, landscape and work for justice in the larger world. “Griffin entered the Nevada Writer Hall of Fame in 2014. He is the editor of Razor Wire, an annual poetry journal. His new books are First, a memoir about cycling 1200 miles through the west with his two sons- River Ask Me Why: Into the West on Two Wheels and his latest collection of poems No Charity in the Wilderness.

The Carson Valley Arts Council celebrates their 20th year with their annual Concert Series. Don’t miss the exciting 2024-2025 season!

The concert on Friday, May 9th will feature The Paperboys. This globe-touring Canadian sextet can be counted on to stomp through Celtic reels, traditional Mexican folk, fiddle tunes, New Orleans brass band music, classic pop songcraft, bluegrass, and even a philosophical waltz or two, before bringing it all home with a Latino/West African singalong.

The performance will take place at the CVIC Hall in Minden. Doors open at 6:00pm, and the concert starts at 7:00pm.

Tickets are $27 for general audience, and free for anyone under the age of 18 with a paid adult ticket. Main Street Gardnerville’s monthly Wine Walks are back for 2025! The Third Thursday Wine Walk takes place on every third Thursday from May to September, with a special theme each month. Main Street invites you to stroll along and visit the various booths run by local businesses and organizations, who will each have some tasty vino for you to try. This event takes place May 15 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm.

May’s theme is “Wine-ding Road Worth Traveling.” Feel free to dress for the occasion and really have fun with it. If wine isn’t your thing – don’t worry! Despite the name, Third Thursday has something for everyone. From hydration stations to non-alcoholic options, food, and more, the Wine Walks are a wonderful way to meet and support local small businesses and meet some pretty incredible people along the way.

Don’t miss this exciting weekend of hot air balloons, competitions, live music, local vendors, and food trucks!

The third annual Carson Valley Hot Air for Hope Balloon Festival will be held at Lampe Park in Gardnerville, Nevada from May 16th-18th, 2025, and will serve as a benefit for the Center for Hope & Healing’s community programs.

Organized by the Carson Valley Balloon Festival and Presented by Carson Tahoe Health, this event is free to the public and will include three public balloon launches from Lampe Park at 6:00am each morning (weather dependent).

On Friday evening, May 16, hot air balloon baskets will fill Lampe Park for “Fire It Up, Carson Valley!” Food trucks and music will start at 6:00pm while pilots set up their gear for one hot night! Be sure to come out and meet the pilots, have a bite to eat, and enjoy some great live music!

In addition to the balloon events, the festivities will include live music, food trucks, live art performances, and local vendors, Friday 6:00pm-10:00pm, Saturday 5:00am-3:00pm (plus Kid’s Zone), and Sunday (food trucks only) from 5:00am-10:00am. Festival activities will occur rain or shine!

The Rotary Giving Cup Golf Tournament (formerly the Bill Henderson Memorial Tournament) is the primary source of funds raised to achieve their mission of assisting children at risk in our community. This year Minden Rotary has partnered with Me For Incredible Youth, Inc (MEFIYI) to be the primary beneficiary of the Giving Cup, with other community groups in the Carson Valley benefitting from the remaining proceeds.

The Kids’ Fishing Derby will be held Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, June 8th, along the banks of Willow Creek at Lampe Park in Gardnerville, and is a FREE event for kids ages 3- 12 years old. Each young angler will be provided everything they need to have a fun fishing experience, is allowed a 2 fish catching limit, and will be given a special gate prize at the end of their session. Additional prizes will be awarded for every special tagged fish caught, as well as to the children who catches the largest fish during each of the 7 derby sessions.

While participation in the event is free, Pre-Registration is required to receive a session ticket. Registration for the event will begin in April 1st and continue until the week of the Derby.

Main Street Gardnerville’s monthly Wine Walks are back for 2025! The Third Thursday Wine Walk takes place on every third Thursday from May to September, with a special theme each month. Main Street invites you to stroll along and visit the various booths run by local businesses and organizations, who will each have some tasty vino for you to try. This event takes place July 17 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm.

July’s theme is “Rosé in the U.S.A.” Feel free to dress for the occasion and really have fun with it. If wine isn’t your thing – don’t worry! Despite the name, Third Thursday has something for everyone. From hydration stations to non-alcoholic options, food, and more, the Wine Walks are a wonderful way to meet and support local small businesses and meet some pretty incredible people along the way.

Registering is easy and can be done the same day of the event at either Larry Peyton Insurance (1544 U.S. Hwy 395 N) or Gardnerville Station (1395 U.S. Hwy 395 N) in Gardnerville. You can also pre-register. It’s $20 for new participants and just $15 for returning participants (just remember to bring your Forever Glass!), or $75 for a season pass to all of this year’s Main Street Wine Walks. The Douglas County Rodeo will be back for its 5th year on September 5th and 6th, 2025! Come to the Douglas County Fairgrounds and enjoy a variety of thrilling rodeo events followed by a concert each night, plus local vendors, food trucks, live music, children’s activities and more!

Celebrate 106 years of this incredible event, complete with countless arts and crafts vendors, food, and of course, its famous candy!

The Genoa “Candy Dance” originated in 1919 as an effort to raise money to purchase street lights for the small, but enterprising community of Genoa, Nevada’s first settlement. Lillian Virgin Finnegan, daughter of then-prominent Judge Daniel Webster Virgin, suggested the idea of a dance and making candy to pass around during the dance as an incentive for a good “turn-out.” The Genoa community did raise the needed funds for streetlights, but realized the monthly electric bill had to be paid. The candy makers were then called upon each year to help promote the “Candy Dance” and pay a year’s worth of electricity for the streetlights throughout the town. Couples would come from Reno, Carson City, and surrounding areas to join in the evening’s fun. The Arts & Crafts Faire was added in the 1970s, and later became a two-day event. The first Faire was held on the front lawn of a private residence on Genoa Lane with twelve vendors. A few years later, the popular Faire was moved to the Mormon Station Historic State Monument grounds. With added expansion through the years, now Faire exhibitors are also found along a major portion of the downtown area. With all the people visiting the Faire these days, the streets in and out of Genoa are temporarily closed during the day from 7:00am-7:00pm.

Save the date for this amazing weekend, which will take place September 27 and 28, 2025. The event, which boasts over 400 arts and crafts, activity, and food vendors, plus a Saturday night Dinner Dance, draws thousands of people to Genoa.

Booths are open from 9:00am -5:00pm Saturday and 9:00am-4:00pm on Sunday. There is also a Saturday night Dinner and Dance (advance tickets are required, and will be available for purchase ahead of the event).

Main Street Gardnerville is hosting their Annual Coffin Races & Fall Festival at Heritage Park in Gardnerville on October 4, 2025 from 9:00am – 3:00pm. This festival offers something for everyone in the family, from Harvest in the community gardens to East Fork Gallery’s scarecrow building or racing a coffin with a team of friends. There will be live music featuring local bands and performances by talented local companies, plus over 60 arts and crafts vendors and a food truck alley. It is a full day of family-friendly activities, wonderful food and beverages, and entertainment sure to get you in the mood for Fall!

This event is FREE to attend and open to the public, so bring your family and friends for a great day in the park!

Join Douglas County Historical Society for a docent-led tour at the Mottsville Cemetery in Gardnerville.

Explore the resting place of pioneers and hear their stories brought to life by Docent guided tours at select grave sites. Experience local history in a unique way as these talented actors portray the lives and legacies of those who shaped our community.

Guided tours will take place on Saturday, October 18 beginning at 3:00pm, with the last tour at 5:00pm. Tickets are $10 per adult, or $5 for DCHS members and youths 17 years and under. Children 6 years and under are free. You can purchase tickets at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center at 1477 US Hwy 395 N in Gardnerville.

Join Main Street Gardnerville on October 18 for the third run of the 2025 “We Run This Town” fun run/walk series, as they fundraise for local cancer treatment centers and raise awareness. Make sure to dress in pink to show your support!
